25-year-old Jim Johnson was arrested on Sunday and now faces murder charges after a shooting at the Palms Casino left a man dead last week. Evan Plunkett of Henderson was attending a party in one of the premier suites at the Palms casino last week when a fight broke out. Johnson allegedly pulled a gun and shot Plunkett several times. Police reports indicate that as many as 50 people were at the party and may have witnessed the murder.
Authorities and medical responders were immediately on the scene of the shooting and transported Plunkett to the hospital, where he later died of his injuries. No reports have indicated what, other than the fight, caused Johnson to murder Plunkett. The victim's family has described him as a loving father and military veteran with aspirations of becoming a rapper.
The Clark County coroner confirmed that Plunkett died of his gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide. Therefore, Johnson may be facing first-degree murder charges. Police have yet to identify any other individuals who may have been involved in the fight that led to the murder.
Homicide charges of first-degree murder are associated with the act of deliberately killing someone with, what's called, malice aforethought. Though this signals premeditation, the person charged does not necessarily have to intend to kill the other person. Johnson could be facing first-degree murder charges or second-degree murder charges, which involves causing the death of another through reckless behavior with little regard for human life.
The penalties for murder often depend on the specific homicide crime charged and the facts of the case. Someone convicted of murder may be facing a very long prison sentence, life imprisonment, or even the death penalty. Because the penalties are so severe, those accused of murder, and other violent crimes, are often well-advised to retain the services of a highly-qualified criminal defense lawyer.
