George Zimmerman was arrested last month in Florida following an alleged assault and battery on his girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe. Zimmerman's girlfriend contacted police and reported that he threatened her with a shotgun. Zimmerman was arrested for aggravated assault, battery and criminal mischief as it related to the reported domestic violence.
Just before Christmas, Zimmerman's girlfriend recanted her story to police regarding the domestic violence situation. Scheibe told authorities she misspoke regarding the claims of domestic violence and she intended to maintain her relationship with Zimmerman.
The Florida State Attorney's Office has dropped all charges against Zimmerman related to the reported domestic violence. With Scheibe recanting her story and now acting as an uncooperative victim/witness the State Attorney is unable to prosecute Zimmerman in the matter.
Emotionally charged instances of domestic violence are not uncommon and a conviction for domestic violence can mean jail time, court-mandated counseling, loss of your right to own a firearm, loss of custody of your children, and other stiff penalties. Sometimes, as appears to be the case with Zimmerman's girlfriend, the allegations are false or misleading. Having an experienced attorney on your team to help present your story is key to obtaining a fair and equitable result in your case.
